Pdf Summary
The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy provides guidance on the use of endoscopy in eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) diagnosis, management, and treatment. Endoscopy is crucial for diagnosing EoE, with at least 6 biopsy samples recommended. Biopsy sampling should be done across different levels of the esophagus. Even if the esophagus appears normal, biopsy samples should still be taken if EoE is suspected. Endoscopy is also used to assess disease activity, monitor treatment response, and treat esophageal strictures through dilation. Dilating esophageal strictures should be done gradually over one or more sessions, and effective management of esophageal inflammation can reduce the need for dilation. The Endoscopic Reference System (EREFS) is recommended for assessing disease activity. The document provides 20 consensus statements for clinicians on the role and use of endoscopy in EoE.
