Video Summary

Dr. Lin Shen, Chief Medical Information Officer at Mass General Brigham, discussed the complexities of implementing AI in clinical practice from a health system perspective. He emphasized the challenges of integrating AI tools amid competing priorities, budget constraints, and diverse stakeholder interests within large healthcare systems. Dr. Shen highlighted the distinction between business owners (who identify problems), solution owners (IT leaders), and end users (clinicians), stressing the importance of aligning these groups to ensure adoption. He also described the multi-layered governance process for technology approval, including considerations like regulatory compliance, bias, ROI, and operational impact. Mass General Brigham prefers to purchase AI solutions but develops custom tools when necessary. Key implementations focus on reducing physician burnout, such as ambient data tools for documentation. Dr. Shen concluded that understanding healthcare business processes and engaging the right decision-makers, especially local CMIOs, is crucial for successful AI adoption in health systems.
