Pdf Summary
Dr. Pichamol Jirapinyo, a speaker from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, presented research on combination therapy using medication and endoscopic bariatric and metabolic therapies (EBMTs) for weight loss and weight regain. The presentation included studies on primary EBMTs, such as the use of anti-obesity medications (AOMs) in patients with a BMI above 30 kg/m2 or above 27 kg/m2 with weight-related comorbidities. Combination therapy was also explored in patients experiencing weight regain following bariatric surgery, such as the use of intragastric balloon (IGB) with AOMs and the use of liraglutide in combination with endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) or the Spatz IGB.

The results of these studies showed promising outcomes, with greater weight loss and reduction in body fat observed in the combination therapy groups compared to monotherapy or endoscopic procedures alone. In addition, Dr. Jirapinyo discussed the use of combination therapy in patients who had undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and experienced weight regain. Transoral outlet reduction (TORe) combined with AOMs was found to be effective in achieving weight loss.

Overall, Dr. Jirapinyo concluded that combination therapy of AOMs and EBMTs is a safe and effective approach for treating obesity and weight regain following bariatric surgery. However, more research is needed to determine the optimal timing and selection of AOMs for each patient and procedure.
