Video Transcription
This DVD is divided into four main areas, each containing several modules of different lengths. We will look at how to perform normal radial and linear EUS before moving on to see the characteristic appearances of various pathologies, and then finally, the use of specialized equipment and how to sample tissues and perform some therapeutic procedures. We shall look at normal EUS through the mediastinum, the stomach, and then the duodenum. In respect of abnormalities and pathologies, we will look at the usual suspects. Rather than using the once-in-a-blue-moon perfect classical example, we will use images and videos that are drawn from everyday procedures. One question that always raises its head in any discussion on EUS learning is, what is the role of CT and anatomy books? The answer is a mixed one, whereas in the mediastinum for both radial and linear, direct comparisons can be made with CT, in the stomach, this really only holds true for radial EUS. In the duodenum, neither radial nor linear views really reflect what we are used to seeing on a CT scan, and certainly not on the illustrations and plates from anatomy books. The reason for this is that the window or keyhole that we can look through is very restrained by the anatomy of the upper GI tract, and also by the effects of rotation. As is standard now with EUS teaching, we have taken a stations approach. Describing scope movements is always fraught and can lead to misinterpretation, so when we mean big wheel back, we mean the up-down wheel being depressed back towards you. The standard representation of wall layers as seen at EUS are given here.
Video Summary
The video is divided into four main areas: performing normal radial and linear endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), recognizing different pathologies, using specialized equipment, and sampling tissues for therapeutic procedures. The video focuses on normal EUS views through the mediastinum, stomach, and duodenum. For abnormalities, the video uses images and videos from everyday procedures rather than perfect classical examples. The role of CT scans and anatomy books is discussed, with direct CT comparisons in the mediastinum, radial EUS in the stomach, and neither radial nor linear views reflecting CT scans or anatomy book illustrations in the duodenum. The video includes a stations approach and provides a standard representation of EUS wall layers. (No credits were mentioned in the transcript.)
