Video Summary
In this video, Andrea Gossard, a certified nurse practitioner and associate professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic, discusses case studies in liver disease. The first case study involves a 54-year-old woman with elevated liver tests. After evaluating the patient's symptoms and conducting tests, it is determined that she has primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), a disease of the bile ducts. PBC is more common in women and is characterized by fatigue and itching. Treatment options for PBC include ursodeoxycholic acid and obeticholic acid. The second case study is about a 24-year-old man with elevated liver enzymes and symptoms of fatigue, itching, and dark urine. It is found that he has primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a condition that affects the bile ducts and is often associated with inflammatory bowel disease. PSC has a higher prevalence in men and can lead to complications such as cholangiocarcinoma. There are currently no FDA-approved therapies for PSC, and treatment options are limited. Regular monitoring and surveillance are important for both PBC and PSC patients.
