ASGE Annual GI Advanced Practice Provider Course (On-Demand) - Onboarding (Day One) | March 2025-Career Development-Building APP Leaders

Pdf Summary

The document, derived from a presentation by Joseph Vicari, MD and Katelyn Cookson, PA-C, focuses on the importance and development of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) leadership, particularly in the GI (Gastroenterology) practice. It emphasizes the necessity of APP leaders due to their increasing roles and indispensability in clinical practice while paralleling physician leadership. Non-APP leadership often leads to inconsistencies; hence, appointing APP leaders ensures efficient processes and reduced turnover, as APP-specific solutions align better with organizational goals.

APP leadership includes defined roles like bridging administration and clinical teams, advocating for APPs, and mentoring. APP leaders are responsible for workforce development, optimizing operational efficiency, improving quality, patient outcomes, and fostering professional development and retention strategies. Core skills for leadership include communication, negotiation, advocacy, business acumen, and conflict resolution.

The document discusses various leadership styles—transformative, participative, and servant leadership, highlighting pros and cons. Servant leadership is seen as most suitable for healthcare, as it values team and organizational harmony. Additionally, it examines multiple intelligences important for leadership: intra-personal and inter-personal intelligence being crucial for self-awareness and empathic interactions.

Strategically, developing APP leaders involves mentorship, leadership training, advanced degrees, and involvement in hospital committees. Leadership structures like direct oversight, dyad models (pairing APP leaders with physicians/administrators), and APP leadership councils are recommended, emphasizing clear reporting, administrative support, and integration into hospital governance.

The final takeaway is that APP leadership is vital for both personal and organizational growth, requiring mentorship, education, and structured pathways. Effective APP leadership is crucial for professional growth and efficiency in healthcare, fostering environments where APPs can thrive and positively impact the healthcare system.
