Video Transcription

Video Summary

The ASGE Endo Hangout webinar provides an in-depth overview of the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship application process, training expectations, and career considerations. Key highlights include data from the 2025 match showing 81 programs offering 95 positions with a 63% match rate among 141 applicants. The application cycle opens January 7, with a February 20 deadline, followed by interviews and match results in July. The fellowship primarily lasts one year, focusing on ERCP and EUS skills, with some programs offering additional subspecialty exposure like third space endoscopy, bariatrics, and complex resections.

Speakers emphasized that advanced endoscopy can fit a range of lifestyles but often involves longer work hours, call obligations, and a high level of clinical responsibility due to complex patient care. Job availability is more limited compared to general GI, and geographical flexibility is important. Visa policies vary, with only about 25% of programs accepting J-1 visas due to funding constraints; H-1B visa holders face fewer barriers.

Applicants are advised to demonstrate genuine passion and clinical competence rather than just procedural experience. Letters of recommendation should be personalized from mentors who know the applicant well. Early engagement with faculty and research involvement strengthen applications. Interview performance focuses on teamwork, adaptability, and cultural fit more than procedural expertise.

Training fully across all advanced procedures is challenging in one year, so fellows often specialize or continue skill development post-fellowship. Female endoscopists shared insights on work-life balance and support systems. Program selection should align with a fellow’s interests, and clear communication about training scope and independence is essential.

Finally, planning for the job market early, leveraging mentorship networks, negotiating contracts carefully, and building collegial relationships are crucial for successful career commencement after fellowship.
