Pdf Summary
In this presentation to the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Nicol Turner Lee discusses the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in mainstream gastroenterology. She highlights that AI and emerging technologies can efficiently address social problems but also acknowledges the biases and challenges associated with these technologies.

Some of the socio-technical risks and concerns include biased decision-making, deliberate misuse by malicious actors, job displacement, data privacy concerns, and environmental impact. On the technical side, nonrepresentative and traumatized datasets, efficiency tradeoffs, and minimal standards for assessing autonomous systems are highlighted.

AI's contribution to gastroenterology includes its use in risk assessment and treatment. AI can provide objective scoring systems for risk stratification, predict disease prognosis and treatment response, and identify candidates for biologic therapy in inflammatory bowel disease.

Key questions for policymakers include determining the effectiveness of AI technology in medical applications and devices, ensuring unbiased and equitable AI systems that surpass potentially inequitable clinical trials, and establishing accountability if AI systems lead to adverse outcomes and liabilities.

Various U.S. regulatory and oversight proposals are discussed, such as the Blueprint for an AI Bill of Rights by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the AI Risk Management Framework by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Additional efforts by regulatory agencies and calls for federal privacy legislation are also mentioned.

Future directions for AI in medicine include integrating AI into workflows, refining algorithms with diverse datasets, standardizing imaging protocols, and addressing ethical, regulatory, and legal considerations. The importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion is also emphasized.

Policymakers have the responsibility to ensure regulatory frameworks keep pace with AI advancements, collaborate with experts and healthcare professionals, and balance regulation to promote innovation while safeguarding patient well-being.

The presentation concludes with a thank you and contact information for Nicol Turner Lee, as well as information about her forthcoming book on the digital divide.
