Pdf Summary

This document provides a basic overview of the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, focusing mainly on the esophagus and stomach. Digestion is described as the breakdown of food into smaller components so the body can absorb nutrients and minerals needed for growth, metabolism, maintenance, and reproduction.

Digestion involves three main processes: motility, secretion, and absorption. Motility includes muscular movements such as peristalsis, which pushes food forward, and segmentation, which mixes food. Secretion refers to the release of acids and enzymes, while absorption is the uptake of nutrients and water into the blood.

The journey of food begins in the mouth, where chewing mechanically breaks down food and saliva moistens it to form a bolus for swallowing. Saliva also contains amylase, which starts carbohydrate digestion, and has antibacterial properties.

The esophagus is a hollow muscular tube, about 18–26 cm long, that carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Its wall contains layers including mucosa and muscle, and its upper portion is made of skeletal muscle while the lower portion is smooth muscle. The lower esophageal sphincter at the gastroesophageal junction helps prevent stomach contents from flowing back into the esophagus.

The stomach is a J-shaped organ that stores food, mixes it with acid and enzymes, and releases small amounts of partially digested food into the small intestine. It has distinct regions including the fundus, body, antrum, pylorus, and cardia. The stomach lining contains rugae, or folds, and specialized cells such as parietal cells, chief cells, and enteroendocrine cells. Its muscular wall has three layers: oblique, circular, and longitudinal. Gastric acid production is regulated by gastrin, histamine, and acid-secreting parietal cells.
