Pdf Summary
The study aimed to validate the Dysphagia Symptom Questionnaire (DSQ) for patients with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) undergoing treatment with budesonide oral suspension (BOS). EoE features high eosinophil levels in the esophageal mucosa and symptoms like dysphagia. Researchers used data from a 12-week, phase-2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 93 patients aged 11-40 years.

The DSQ was found feasible to implement, with minimal item-level missing data at baseline. Item discrimination was strong, and floor and ceiling effects were below 9%. Higher DSQ scores correlated with dysphagia severity. The DSQ detected symptom changes over time and agreed with physician and other patient-rated measures, establishing its construct validity.

Test-retest reliability was strong (intraclass correlation coefficient, r = 0.82), and the DSQ was responsive to disease-level changes, with higher scores reflecting increased eosinophilic burden. The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and clinically important difference (CID) in DSQ score were estimated at 27.4% and 55.4%, respectively.

Overall, the DSQ demonstrated psychometric soundness, measuring frequency and severity of dysphagia reliably. Construct validity, reliability, and responsiveness all supported its use in clinical trials for EoE to evaluate therapies like BOS. The findings endorse the DSQ as a viable patient-reported outcome measure for future therapeutic studies in EoE, capturing the primary symptom of dysphagia effectively.
