Pdf Summary
This study explores the motivations, barriers, and outcomes associated with patient-reported shared decision-making (SDM) in treating eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). Using a web-based survey, data were gathered from adult patients and caregivers of pediatric patients across the USA.

Key Findings:
1. **Motivations for Treatment**: The primary incentive for seeking treatment was preventing disease complications. Other motivators included symptom relief and health responsibility, though only about half trusted that treatments like medications or diets could effectively manage their disease.

2. **Barriers to Treatment**: Common barriers included financial costs, potential side effects, and the inconvenience associated with specific treatments like topical steroids and diet therapy. The study noted variance in barriers between adults and children, highlighting issues like cost and nutritional adequacy of restrictive diets.

3. **Shared Decision Making**: The study found that nearly half of the respondents reported low levels of SDM. It was practiced more by gastroenterologists, yet many patients noted a lack of comprehensive SDM in their care. Those who reported higher SDM also reported higher satisfaction with their treatment.

4. **Satisfaction with Treatment**: Only a minority of adults felt satisfied with their current treatment, whereas a higher percentage of caregivers of children with EoE reported satisfaction. Satisfaction correlated with perceived higher levels of SDM.

5. **Patient Experience**: The survey results suggest a disconnect in provider-patient communication and a need for improved SDM practices to increase patient satisfaction and treatment adherence.

Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of SDM in the management of EoE, suggesting that both physicians and patients benefit from open communication and a shared approach to treatment planning, accounting for patient preferences and informed decisions. There is a call to action for enhancing patient-provider interactions to improve treatment experiences and outcomes.
