Pdf Summary
The American Nurses Association (ANA) advocates for a transformation in the U.S. healthcare system to achieve the "Triple Aim": enhancing patient care experiences, improving population health, and reducing healthcare costs per capita. To address the current system's inefficiencies, a shift towards patient-centered, team-based healthcare is recommended. This approach involves diverse healthcare professionals working collaboratively to achieve coordinated, high-quality care.

High-functioning healthcare teams require shared values and principles like mutual trust, effective communication, and clear role definitions, aligning all members towards shared patient goals. The expanded team composition should include nurses, physicians, pharmacists, therapists, social workers, and other allied health professionals.

Despite its potential benefits, implementing team-based care faces challenges, such as outdated scope of practice laws that restrict healthcare professionals from fully utilizing their training and expertise. These laws often require, without supporting evidence, physician supervision of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs), hindering efficient care delivery. The ANA argues that all healthcare professionals should practice to the full extent of their education and training.

Team-based care also encounters reimbursement barriers since traditional payment systems favor individual provider encounters, often valuing physician services over other disciplines. Effective implementation requires policy reforms and new payment models recognizing the team's collective contribution, regardless of leadership roles.

The ANA calls for collaboration between policymakers, the nursing community, and stakeholders to reform scope of practice laws. Educating patients about team-based care and engaging them actively in health decisions is essential. Addressing these challenges could improve healthcare quality and accessibility, aligning with modern needs without unnecessary, costly restrictions.
