Pdf Summary
Effective teamwork in healthcare is vital for safe patient care, yet many multidisciplinary healthcare teams face persistent challenges such as accountability, conflict management, decision-making, progress reflection, and coaching. To address these challenges, the authors developed a Team Effectiveness Framework, which is both evidence-based and comprehensive. The framework is designed to be applicable across various team types within the healthcare setting—clinical, administrative, and research teams alike.

This study involved multiple steps to create the framework. Initially, the development was grounded in existing team science literature. It advanced through semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, followed by input from healthcare professionals in diverse roles to refine the framework. A diagnostic tool, consisting of survey items corresponding to each team competency, was also developed to assess and identify common teamwork challenges among healthcare teams.

Key findings indicated that common challenges exist across different healthcare settings, affecting both clinical and administrative teams similarly. These include issues related to holding team members accountable, managing conflicts effectively, making informed and collaborative decisions, reflecting on the progress to advance team performance, and providing ongoing coaching and development for team members.

The authors propose strategies to manage these challenges, including fostering a supportive culture where teamwork is reinforced, encouraging shared leadership, and promoting an environment where team members can learn continuously and effectively exchange information. Implementing these strategies can contribute to the development of ideal team states characterized by psychological safety, adaptability, and resilience.

Overall, the proposed framework offers a structure for improving team development interventions and can integrate effectively into healthcare professional education, thereby helping to enhance team performance in the dynamic and high-stakes field of healthcare.
