Pdf Summary
Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic condition characterized by the inflammation of the esophagus. It affects individuals across all age groups, particularly those aged 5-14 years and 20-45 years. EoE commonly presents in children over 12 years of age with difficulty swallowing and chronic dysphagia (long-term trouble swallowing). Other symptoms include sensations of reflux, chest pressure, and painful swallowing when eating.

The cause of EoE is believed to be an abnormal type 2 immune response to certain foods and possibly airborne allergens. Research continues to investigate the exact mechanisms behind the condition. There is currently no cure for EoE; however, consistent and regular therapy can significantly reduce the risk of narrowing and inflammation of the esophagus.

Diagnosis of EoE requires a combination of clinical history and biopsy results from a gastroscopy, which should reveal high counts of eosinophils. It is important to consult a gastroenterologist to distinguish EoE from other conditions with similar biopsy findings, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Although EoE is a significant medical condition, current research finds no direct link between EoE and esophageal cancer. Reliable diagnosis and ongoing management are essential to handling EoE effectively and mitigating its symptoms.

References:
1. Arias Á, Lucendo AJ.
