GI Unit Leadership: Shaping a High-Performing Endoscopy Unit (On-Demand) | February 2026-You’re the Leader. Now What?

Video Summary

The speaker discusses decision-making in groups, especially amid disagreement. Humans often make quick, reflexive judgments like robots—e.g., instantly choosing to pick up a baby over a wolf. While expertise helps, it can hinder leadership decisions due to blind spots. Effective decision-making requires shifting from reflexive responses ("on the dance floor") to a broader perspective ("on the balcony"), enabling recognition of differing viewpoints and challenges. To tackle complex issues (like scheduling or staffing), leaders should craft an "illuminating question" focused on desired outcomes, gather diverse perspectives to create shared reality, acknowledge fears and worries, and generate multiple options—using techniques like the "eccentric genie" to challenge assumptions. The process culminates in selecting actionable steps and implementing them, avoiding inaction post-meetings. Emphasizing process over analysis helps uncover blind spots, build consensus, and move forward collaboratively with awareness of complexities and differing viewpoints.
