Pdf Summary
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to greatly enhance clinical performance and patient outcomes in gastroenterology (GI) endoscopy. However, the field is still in its early stages of development. To guide the implementation of AI in GI endoscopy, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) has formed an AI Task Force. This task force has outlined three key priorities:

1. Priority Use Cases: The task force has identified specific clinical scenarios where AI algorithms can be developed, including computer vision applications for colon polyp detection and diagnosis, detection of dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus, detection of gastric cancer precursor lesions and early gastric cancer, and detection of dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease. These priority use cases provide a starting point for developing AI technology that improves clinical outcomes and clinical workflow.

2. Data Science Priorities: An important aspect of AI development is the availability of high-quality, labeled images for training algorithms. The task force recommends the development of an endoscopy image and video library, called Endonet, to accelerate computer vision innovation in GI endoscopy. Additionally, standardization of methods for storing, sharing, and labeling endoscopic images and videos is needed to ensure interoperability and facilitate AI algorithm development.

3. Research Priorities: The task force emphasizes the need for high-quality prospective trials to measure the clinical impact of AI interventions in GI endoscopy. These trials should focus on clinically meaningful outcomes and include diverse patient groups and practice settings. The task force also highlights the importance of validating computer vision tools in prospective clinical trials.

By addressing these priorities, the ASGE AI Task Force aims to support the successful integration of AI technologies in GI endoscopy practice.
