Pdf Summary
In this presentation, Professor David Armstrong discusses the concept of a smart endoscopy suite and how it should look. An endoscopy suite consists of preparation, procedural, and recovery areas, as well as disinfection and cleaning areas for equipment. It requires trained and accredited endoscopists, nursing staff, and additional personnel. The suite should also have emergency equipment and a program for quality assurance.

The structure of an endoscopy suite includes patient flow, endoscope transport, and room setup. The function of an endoscopy suite is to provide access to endoscopy for diagnosis or therapy that is high quality, appropriate, safe, accurate, effective, and resource-appropriate. It should also be patient-centered, timely, comfortable, acceptable, and convenient.

There are various quality indicators and assessment tools for evaluating the performance of an endoscopy suite. These include the Canadian Global Rating Scale (C-GRS) and the Endoscopy Unit Quality Indicators developed by the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA).

One of the challenges in assessing quality indicators is tracking vital signs and equipment, which are often recorded manually. Patient flow analysis is another important aspect, as it helps analyze room utilization and turnover time. Endoscopy reporting is often non-standardized, non-searchable, and incomplete. Obtaining data for quality improvement can be challenging for endoscopists.

A smart endoscopy suite should facilitate data collection in all its activities, from patient referral to discharge. It should use real-time reporting and image annotation with standardized terms, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) for voice recognition, polyp detection, and lesion characterization. The suite should also link endoscopic diagnoses to outcomes, provide feedback to endoscopists for skill enhancement, and gather patient feedback through tablet-based surveys.

In conclusion, a smart endoscopy suite should provide high-quality endoscopy services, ensure access to accurate and reliable data for quality assurance and improvement, and automate and standardize data collection using AI technologies.
