Pdf Summary
The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare faces challenges in terms of reimbursement in a fee-for-service environment. However, as value-based payment models become more prevalent, AI can prove to be a valuable tool in improving quality and reducing costs. Current payment pathways, such as the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule and the Inpatient Prospective Payment System, provide opportunities for reimbursement of AI technologies like the diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy and the detection of large-vessel occlusion stroke. The key stakeholders who may be responsible for paying for AI include patients, healthcare professionals, healthcare systems, health insurance companies, and AI companies and developers. While the possibility of Federal funding for AI in healthcare is uncertain, physicians can benefit from AI by increasing productivity and reducing malpractice risk, leading to opportunities for high-value procedures. Health systems may also see decreased systemic costs related to malpractice. Ultimately, the successful integration and reimbursement of AI in healthcare will depend on the development of sustainable financial models and the transition towards value-based care.
