Masterclass: Advanced GI Endoscopic Imaging (On-Demand) | December 2025-Saeed

Pdf Summary

The document discusses Red Dichromatic Imaging (RDI), an advanced endoscopic technology designed to enhance the detection of bleeding in gastrointestinal (GI) procedures. Developed by Dr. Ahmed Saeed, RDI leverages dual amber and red LED light sources from the processor to improve visualization of blood vessels and bleeding points. The red light penetrates deeper tissues with low absorption by hemoglobin, producing a bright background, while amber light, absorbed more by hemoglobin, makes blood vessels appear darker. This combination allows digital subtraction and image enhancement to effectively map blood vessels.

RDI operates in three modes: Mode 1 focuses on superficial blood vessels to detect bleeding sites by reducing image noise; Mode 2 highlights deeper blood vessels; and Mode 3 offers minimal image processing for a more natural image while still enhancing vessels.

Clinically, RDI is valuable in identifying bleeding sites in both upper and lower GI bleeds and locating bleeding vessels during therapeutic procedures such as polypectomy, endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD), ERCP, and POEM. It facilitates safer interventions by detecting nearby vessels in the submucosal layer during third space endoscopy, identifying exposed vessels at post-resection bases, and marking safe mucosal incisions to prevent bleeding.

Examples provided include its application in detecting bleeding during ESD, managing duodenal bleeds, and visualizing duodenal ulcers. Overall, RDI technology enhances endoscopic precision and safety by improving the identification and management of bleeding during GI procedures.
