On the Bleeding Edge: Mastering GI Emergencies and Inpatient GI Consultation (Live and Virtual)| September 2026-Locum Tenens and Fair Market Value Talk

Video Transcription

Video Summary

Kim Siebert discusses locum tenens as a growing career option for gastroenterologists, particularly in inpatient GI. Its main advantages are schedule flexibility, better work-life balance, autonomy, fewer administrative duties, and strong compensation. Physicians can choose where and how often to work, though assignments may require travel and time away from family.

Challenges include limited job security, adapting to new teams and electronic records, working without local colleagues or mentorship, managing follow-up, and running a business. Siebert emphasizes that locums physicians must understand their value and negotiate carefully. Rates, overtime, hours included in a daily rate, orientation, remote work, and other compensation should be clarified in writing. Physicians should also read contracts closely and scrutinize malpractice coverage, cancellation penalties, non-compete clauses, and indemnification terms.

She cautions that agency representatives are experienced negotiators, so physicians should prepare, protect their negotiating position, and avoid agreeing to terms under pressure. Locums work is generally structured as 1099 contracting, with associated tax and insurance considerations. Although agencies take a share, direct hospital contracts may pay less and shift travel and malpractice costs to the physician.

Siebert advocates for greater transparency and collective action to improve rates and stability, arguing that locums compensation should reflect its benefits gap, travel demands, and lack of employment security.
