On the Bleeding Edge: Mastering GI Emergencies and Inpatient GI Consultation (On-Demand)

Pdf Summary

The document is a presentation about locum tenens work and fair market value in inpatient GI consultation. It highlights the main advantages of locums, including flexibility, better work-life balance, autonomy, minimal administrative burden, high pay, and being paid for one’s time. It also notes several drawbacks, such as lack of stability, isolation, the need to run one’s own business, use of vendor management systems (VMS), limited transparency, having to adapt to new environments, and time away from family.

The presentation warns about common compensation traps. Physicians should understand their own value, be familiar with numbers and industry terms, and recognize the actual workload of the hospital. It also emphasizes that agency representatives are skilled negotiators, so contracts should not be based on verbal promises. Important items, such as off-site or remote work and orientation requirements, should be documented in writing.

Several contract pitfalls are identified. These include failing to read the contract carefully, vague language about malpractice coverage, hidden personal financial risks, restrictive covenants or non-compete clauses, and indemnification clauses. Overall, the presentation encourages physicians to be informed, cautious, and thorough when negotiating locum tenens agreements to protect themselves financially and professionally.
