Video Summary

ASGE hosted a virtual event introducing its Endoscopy Technician Training Program, outlining why standardized education and career pathways are critical for endoscopy teams. Dr. Mohan Raju explained the program’s origins through a partnership among Houston Community College (HCC), UT MD Anderson, and ASGE. Beginning in 2015, an advisory board developed a one-year, 35–credit hour Level II certificate combining cognitive and technical training. Course content was designed with extensive medical illustration and delivered using short “flipped classroom” videos, now also available on YouTube. HCC has graduated multiple cohorts and uses an externally validated exam built from a large peer-reviewed question bank. A “prior learning assessment” pathway allows experienced technicians (about four years) to test out of 60–70% of credits, reducing time and cost. Dr. Raju also highlighted a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship model and MD Anderson’s separate 12-week intensive training approach.

Dr. Andrew Storm described Mayo Clinic’s use of the ASGE curriculum to create an “Advanced Endoscopy Assistant” role, addressing high technician turnover and lack of advancement. Mayo linked training completion to a formal role, new job description, and pay structure; turnover dropped dramatically, with none leaving after implementation. A technician testimonial emphasized improved understanding of procedures (especially ERCP), increased responsibility, and stronger team integration.

ASGE’s Kevin Jansen demonstrated the GILeap-hosted bundle: videos, interactive e-learning modules, a game, progress tracking, and a 201-question final exam (pulled from a larger bank), with reporting tools for group members. The program is free to ASGE members (including via group membership), and attendees were given membership and contact options for access.
