Because ERCP is an advanced technique, it is associated with a higher frequency of serious complications than other endoscopic procedures. Accordingly, specialized training and equipment are required, and the procedure should be reserved for appropriate clinical indications. It is estimated that about 500,000 ERCP procedures are performed annually in the United States. It is commonly indicated in cases where patients present with abnormal liver function tests with a dilated common bile duct, gallstones, and pancreatitis, or biliary stones determined through positive MRCP, finding a mass in the head of the pancreas and jaundice caused by obstruction.
