DDW 2018 Presidential Plenary Debate: Dr. Prateek Sharma v Dr. Marcia Irene Canto | August 2018
Released: August 2018
Viewing Time: 13 minutes
Description
Barrett’s esophagus is the presence of specialized intestinal metaplasia of the tubular esophagus and is recognized as a precursor lesion to esophageal adenocarcinoma. The development of Barrett’s esophagus is believed to be a reparative response to reflux-induced damage to the native squamous epithelium, with subsequent replacement with a metaplastic intestestinalized epithelium. Metaplastic Barrett’s esophagus is associated with increased cellular proliferation and turnover that may result in progression to dysplasia. This session assesses ablative techniques that are considered in balancing effective elimination of all dysplastic mucosa with the possibility of damaging deeper esophageal layers.

Is RFA the “King” in complete eradication of Barrett’s Esophagus? Should cryotherapy be considered as the technique where it causes cellular destruction by using freeze-thaw cycles?

Listen to the experts, Dr. Prateek Sharma and Dr. Marcia Irene Canto, debate the pros and cons associated with considering the use of these techniques
