Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) is widely used for the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal, gastric and small bowel disorders. When properly performed, it is generally safe, and well-tolerated for the examination of the upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract.

• Identify ASGE/ACG endorsed indicators for quality performance of EGD
• Discuss the evidence which supports these indicators and performance targets for these indicators.

Walter G. Park, MD, MS, is a board-certified gastroenterologist. His clinical and research interests include a broad array of gastrointestinal conditions and include quality measurement and improvement. He has a specific interest in pancreatic diseases. He received his undergraduate degree at the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, and his medical degree at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology at Stanford University Medical Center, where he also obtained a Masters Degree in Health Services Research. He co-authored the updated ASGE/ACG paper on Quality Indicators in Esophagogastroduodenoscopy, has served on the ASGE Quality Assurance in Endoscopy Committee, and has chaired the ASGE Health & Public Policy Committee.
