A consortium of organizations/institutions including National Cancer Institute, American Academic Medical Centers, the American Cancer Society, the ASGE, Industry, and medical centers in several East African countries joined together to form African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC). The goal is to work together to prevent, provide earlier diagnoses, to study, and to treat esophageal squamous cell cancer. For the past four years, clinical research studies, conferences, and endoscopic training and education have taken place and ASGE members have been given the opportunity to participate. Essentially all the endoscopic training, particularly for the placement of esophageal stents, has been “hands-on“. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced medical educators and trainers to work and teach remotely. This webinar presents and overview of the problems associated with esophageal cancer in East Africa. It also demonstrates remote endoscopic teaching. There is also the discussion of the stent access initiative which broadly covers the program of stent placement for the management of advanced disease. Come join leaders from United States and East Africa, who will further discuss Esophageal Cancer in Africa, the AfrECC initiative, remote access teaching and different ways you can get involved.
