The purpose of this presentation is to provide up-to-date information with an accompanying downloadable slide deck for ASGE members and practicing gastroenterologists to use in their discussions and/or presentations to their primary care community and others on the importance of colon rectal screening. A review of colorectal cancer classification will be discussed, highlighting critical clinical and pathological features. Information and key studies will be referenced on efforts made that correlate genetic and molecular features in classification systems of colorectal cancer.

An overview will be provided on how colonoscopy has had an impact on residual colon cancer. Highlighted studies will demonstrate how colon cancer prevention has been impacted through the use of colonoscopy with specific references to ~80% on left sided colon cancers as compared to ~40% - 50% on right sided colon cancers. Hear specific information on why there has been a decline in colon cancer rates since 1985 in those 50 years of age and older as compared to a noted increasing rate of colon cancer in those 50 years of age or less. Recommendations forward will be discussed.

Dr. Rex is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine, Chancellor’s Professor at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, and Director of Endoscopy at Indiana University Hospital in Indianapolis.  He co-authored the colorectal cancer screening recommendations of the American College of Gastroenterology and the U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer.  He also authored the recommendations on quality in colonoscopy for the U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer, the ACG and ASGE.  He has authored more than 200 original research papers, 55 book chapters, 200 invited papers, 40 editorials, and 40 guideline papers.  He is the current chair of the U.S. Multi-Society Task Force on Colorectal Cancer.  He served as Chairman of the Board of Governors at the ACG, as well as was a Past President of the ACG.  He is a member of the Governing Board of ASGE and a recipient of the Rudolph V. Schindler Award from ASGE.

Practicing Gastroenterologists and GI Fellows

Because all browsers continually roll out new versions and updates, it is not always practical to point to a particular browser as "better" than another. Because browsers are free, you can easily shift from one to another for various purposes. Whatever browser you are using, here are some tips for better streaming and viewing of ASGE videos:

1. Close other applications and browser tabs. This decreases the load on memory so your computer or other device can focus on streaming.
2. Use a 5 GHz frequency if your router supports it. The common 2.4 GHz frequency is used by household appliances, so is more crowded. Avoiding it is like getting into the carpool lane on a freeway: smoother sailing.
3. Use Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi if possible but GI LEAP is built with Wi-Fi in mind. 
4. Monitor your internet connection. If your ISP has promised you 5MBps and you are getting only 1MBps, it's time for a phone call to your internet provider to sort that out.
