Ileocecum (DV066)
Released:  May 2015
Viewing Time:  1 hour 5 minutes
Description

This CME activity consists of the ASGE video, Ileocecum, followed by a post-assessment and evaluation.

For gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopists, the ileocecum is the finishing line during colonoscopy and it is identified by several landmarks: terminal ileum (TI), ileocecal (IC) valve, and the appendiceal orifice. Radiologists generally term the cecum, appendix, IC valve, and TI as the "ileocecal area." There is much pathology that can be observed within the ileocecum. Careful and systematic examination should be stressed during GI endoscopic training and practice. In this review, the authors demonstrate its anatomy, endoscopic findings, and pathologies. We believe that these are the three principles in ileocecal examination: optimal colon preparation, recognition and photodocumentation of the ileocecal landmarks, and systematic and careful examination of the ileocecum.
