Description
During this program, Dr. Jason Samarasena will provide an overview of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) and how it is a precursor lesion to esophageal adenocarcinoma, a malignancy with a 5-year survival rate of less than 20%. Patients with Barrett’s esophagus undergo endoscopic surveillance with the goal of detecting dysplasia. The degree of dysplasia is the most widely accepted predictor of progression, and hence the surveillance intervals recommended by GI societies are based on the dysplasia grade. A review of the most current literature will be discussed, with highlights indicating Barrett's esophagus both endoscopic surveillance interval and treatment recommendations being based on the presence and grade of histopathological diagnosed dysplasia. Levels of surveillance and other factors will be discussed in detail and how the clinician should take into consideration their evaluation of this patient population.
Learning Objectives
1. List the risk of progression of Barrett’s indefinite for dysplasia to dysplastic Barrett’s and/or esophageal adenocarcinoma.
2. Identify the risk factors and application of a scoring system for clinical failure after peroral endoscopic myotomy for achalasia.
3. Compare and contrast linked color imaging and narrow-band imaging for colorectal polyp detection.
