Endoscopic emergencies happen, and when they do, it is a unique experience for the endoscopy team in regarding optimal management and interventions. The patients most at risk for endoscopic emergencies are often critically ill and may be at higher risk for adverse cardiopulmonary events. Having a prepared plan to optimize sedation management, availability of tools for cardiopulmonary monitoring and ability to mobilize team resources is critical.
Over the past several years, technological advances in endoscopy have led to a wide range of new techniques and procedures available to treat these conditions. This course will address common and uncommon endoscopic emergencies and how best to prepare and manage these clinical situations. Endoscopic emergencies including bleeding, perforation, gastrointestinal foreign bodies, caustic ingestions, bowel obstruction, volvulus, cholangitis, bile leak and food impactions will be covered during this course. Distinct variables in the treatment of these conditions require early recognition and immediate handling to make a difference in the subsequent outcome.
